Netflix’s long in development Assassin’s Creed live action series is continuing to gain momentum, with a major creative hire now confirmed. A new report has revealed that Johan Renck, the acclaimed director behind HBO’s Chernobyl, has been selected to direct the upcoming adaptation of Ubisoft’s long running video game franchise.
According to Variety, Renck will helm the Netflix Assassin’s Creed series, adding significant prestige to the project. The Swedish filmmaker is best known for directing the critically acclaimed Chernobyl miniseries, but his television resume also includes The Last Panther and episodes of major shows such as Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Vikings, and Bates Motel.
In addition to Renck’s involvement, the report confirms that Roberto Patino and David Wiener will serve as creators, showrunners, and executive producers on the series. Ubisoft Film & Television will also play a key role in the production, with Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill, Matt O’Toole, and Genevieve Jones attached as executive producers.
The series has been moving quickly in recent months. In October, Netflix confirmed that actor Toby Wallace, known for his role in Euphoria, has been cast as the lead. A separate report in November also shed light on the show’s setting, though full story details remain under wraps.
While Netflix has not revealed a full plot synopsis, the official logline offers a clear sense of the show’s direction. The series will center on a long running conflict between two secret factions. One group is “set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will.”
