ESA Reveals Accessible Games Initiative

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has announced the launch of the Accessible Games Initiative, a new project aimed at enhancing game accessibility for players with disabilities.

Developed in collaboration with major industry players including Electronic Arts, Google, Microsoft, Nintendo of America, Sony Interactive Entertainment, and Ubisoft, the initiative seeks to provide clearer information about accessibility features in video games.

Additional companies, such as Amazon Games, Riot Games, Square Enix, and Warner Bros. Games, have since joined the initiative to support this important cause.

The initiative introduces 24 accessibility tags that developers can use to highlight key features in their games, such as narrated menus, input remapping, stick inversion, subtitle formats, and color alternatives. A full list of these tags is available on the Accessible Games Initiative website.

According to the ESA, these tags were "developed with insight and feedback sourced directly from players with disabilities, accessibility advocacy groups, and game development teams."

While the implementation of these tags is voluntary, they will be prominently displayed on digital storefronts, product pages, or digital catalogues, making it easier for players to identify games that meet their accessibility needs.

“Tens of millions of Americans have disabilities and often face barriers to experiencing the joy and connection that comes with playing video games,” said ESA president and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis.
