Zynga has officially closed down its subsidiary Echtra Games, the studio behind Torchlight 3, as part of a broader shift in company strategy.
In a statement provided to IGN, the company said, “Zynga has made the difficult decision to cease operations at its Echtra Studio, ending the development on future titles and reducing roles. This decision is part of a strategic realignment of the company’s resources and priorities. We will work closely with impacted employees so they are treated with utmost respect and consideration as we navigate this difficult process.”
Echtra Games, based in San Francisco, was established in 2016 by industry veteran Max Schaefer, known for his work as a co-founder of Blizzard North and co-creator of the Diablo franchise. After the closure of Runic Games in 2017, Echtra picked up the Torchlight legacy, launching Torchlight Frontiers in 2018—later rebranded as Torchlight 3.
The studio was acquired by Zynga in 2021, prior to Zynga itself being purchased by Take-Two Interactive in 2022. The closure of Echtra follows another recent cutback: the cancellation of Star Wars: Hunters, a title developed by Zynga and its UK/US-based subsidiary NaturalMotion. NaturalMotion also reportedly experienced layoffs last October, though specific numbers were not disclosed.
