Game Informer, one of the last remaining gaming magazines, is closing down after 33 years, as announced by the GameStop-owned publication on Friday. The entire staff is being laid off.
The publication did not provide a reason for the shutdown. GameStop has not yet responded to requests for comment. Last year, GameStop CEO and chairman Ryan Cohen emphasized the need for stringent cost-cutting measures, stating in an email obtained by Kotaku that "every expense at the company must be scrutinized under a microscope and all waste eliminated."

In March, Game Informer had introduced a new subscription model, allowing direct subscriptions to the magazine. Previously, it was available only through individual purchases or via a GameStop Pro subscription. Former video lead Alex Van Aken noted that the Game Informer website was taken down completely, preventing employees from backing up their work. Currently, the site only displays the statement shared on social media.
Kyle Hilliard, the former content director, mentioned that the team was "about 70% done with the next issue" when the magazine was abruptly shut down and the entire team was laid off.
GameStop acquired Game Informer in 2000.
Company stated "After 33 thrilling years of bringing you the latest news, reviews, and insights from the ever-evolving world of gaming, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Game Informer. From the early days of pixelated adventures to today’s immersive virtual realms, we’ve been honored to share this incredible journey with you, our loyal readers. While our presses may stop, the passion for gaming that we’ve cultivated together will continue to live on. Thank you for being part of our epic quest, and may your own gaming adventures never end."
