Ubisoft Sued for Sharing Customer Data

Two U.S.-based players have filed a class action lawsuit against Ubisoft, alleging that the company improperly shared users' Personally Identifying Information (PII) from its online store with Meta Platforms. The lawsuit was initiated on October 3, 2024, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

The plaintiffs claim that when users purchase games from Ubisoft's store or access the service as Ubisoft+ subscribers while logged into their Facebook accounts, their PII is captured by Meta's tracking Pixel. This data is then allegedly transferred to Meta, making the information accessible to anyone with average technical skills who can receive such data.

According to the lawsuit, the Video Privacy Protection Act prohibits video tape service providers, including Ubisoft, from sharing PII without user consent. The plaintiffs argue that Ubisoft "purposefully implemented and utilized the Pixel" to track user activity and share this information with Facebook for marketing purposes.
