Wolves Esports, the esports division of English football club Wolverhampton Wanderers, has officially signed chess grandmaster Yu Yangyi.
Yu, China’s youngest grandmaster, has an impressive track record, including two World Chess Olympiad team titles, two World Team Chess Championship victories, and two Chinese Chess King Tournament trophies. Currently ranked 28th in the world on Chess.com, he will compete under the Wolves Esports banner at the Esports World Cup 2025, set to take place in Riyadh in June 2025.
This marks the first time Chess will be featured in the multi-title event, with a dedicated $1.5 million prize pool for the tournament.

“Yu Yangyi ranks among the top players on the CCT international leaderboard. We look forward to his performance representing Wolves Esports in the Esports World Cup,” the organization shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account.
With a strong presence in the Chinese esports scene, Wolves Esports competes in multiple titles, including Honor of Kings, PUBG Mobile, and Call of Duty Mobile. The organization has earned over $13 million in tournament prize winnings, securing back-to-back King Pro League Spring championships in 2023 and 2024.
