|content=Apple is under increasing regulatory scrutiny in Brazil as the country's top antitrust authority has recommended formal action against the tech giant for allegedly engaging in anti-competitive behavior within its iOS ecosystem.

The recommendation comes from the General Superintendence of Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defense (SG/CADE), an independent regulatory body tied to the Ministry of Justice. According to a report from MacRumors, the investigation stems from a 2022 complaint lodged by e-commerce platforms Ebazar.com.br Ltda. and Mercado Livre.

The complaint accused [[Companies/Apple|Apple]] of limiting in-app payments on iOS to its own payment infrastructure and restricting developers from informing users about other payment options—practices regulators believe give Apple an unfair advantage.

In a decision dated June 30, SG/CADE concluded that Apple’s approach harms competition:

“The restrictions create artificial barriers to the entry of competitors in markets related to the iOS system, which is fully controlled by Apple,” the agency stated. “In doing so, the company makes it difficult for new agents to operate, artificially preserves its dominant position and reduces the options available to developers and users of the platform.”

Should the case move forward, Apple could face substantial fines and be required to make significant changes to how it operates its iOS ecosystem in Brazil, particularly concerning its App Store and in-app payment systems.

This development adds to the growing international pressure on Apple over its control of digital marketplaces. The company has already had to revise its App Store policies in the European Union in response to the Digital Markets Act, which targets tech monopolies and demands greater openness and consumer choice.
