After nearly a decade in beta, Tarkov is moving toward version 1.0 — and with it comes a sweeping update that changes how the hardcore looter-shooter is played. Dubbed the “Road to Release” update, this patch is shaping up to be a final softening of the notoriously punishing experience that has defined Tarkov since its inception. The update is scheduled to drop on Wednesday, October 8, and will introduce what many are calling a “softcore” version of the game. Nikita Geneburn, the head of Battlestate Games, unveiled the complete list of incoming changes on social media, offering players a rare look at how the team is rebalancing Escape from Tarkov in preparation for its official launch. ==== A Softer, More Accessible Tarkov ==== Among the most notable changes is a significant reduction in player inertia — particularly for those carrying heavy loads. According to Geneburn, “the greater the overload, the greater the reduction,” with inertia seeing a reduction of up to 70%. Players will also enjoy a 50% increase in carry weight, further easing the challenge of navigating Tarkov’s demanding environments. Other tweaks include: 60% reduction in aimpunch, making gunfights less punishing when under fire. An increase in valuable loot spawns, with more items found in high-value areas. More containers and hidden stashes throughout the map, encouraging exploration. Weapon cases and other rare containers now spawn in Marked Rooms. Colored keycards will appear more frequently in the Lab, improving access to its lucrative rewards. Perhaps most controversial is the reworked Flea Market system. All item types will now be tradable, and the feature unlocks at level 10 — significantly earlier than in previous wipes. Players will also start with a minimum of five slots on the market, streamlining the economy and offering easier access to gear. Skill progression is also getting a boost, with faster levelling and increased experience for raid completions. These quality-of-life improvements mark a stark departure from the game’s more punishing design, and indicate Battlestate’s willingness to make Tarkov more inviting for a broader player base. While many players have welcomed the changes as a breath of fresh air, not everyone is on board. One of the most contentious decisions is the removal of hardcore wipe achievements, which are now no longer available to complete. This move has frustrated players who were nearing the end of their grind for these exclusive, time-limited goals.
