According to Rockstar, the workers were dismissed for sharing secret game information in a private Discord server. However, a post on the GTA Forums, written by a former employee and confirmed by the site’s admins, tells a very different story. The former employee claimed that no one in the private Discord group leaked any game details. Instead, the group — which included only Rockstar employees — was being used to talk about unionizing, or joining together to ask for better working conditions. The post suggests that Rockstar may have fired the workers not for leaking information, but for trying to organize a union. ==== Fired Without Warning ==== In the post, written by a user named “Organize,” the person described how employees in the United Kingdom and Canada were called into short meetings with human resources (HR). They thought it would be a quick chat, but instead, they were handed letters saying they were fired for “gross misconduct” related to Discord messages. “They failed to provide any evidence when asked, nor was any stated in the letter,” the post said. “They refused their right to Union representation in the disciplinary meeting (which is against UK employment law) and were frogmarched out of the studio with the meeting lasting less than 5 minutes.” Some employees were fired over the phone in calls that lasted only a few minutes. The post mentioned that one worker had a panic attack during the call, and HR hung up on them instead of helping. The fired workers weren’t new or inexperienced. Many had been at Rockstar for years — some for more than 18 years — and worked as artists, animators, programmers, designers, and producers. Some were even team leads. The post explained that many were on medical leave, recovering from surgery, or on paternity leave when they were dismissed, leaving them without pay and in serious financial trouble just before the holidays. The former employee wrote: “Let me make this clear! I never saw any discussion/leaking of Rockstar projects in the Union Discord. The only ever discussion was around unionisation efforts and the working conditions at R*... This was Union Busting and nothing else!” According to the post, everyone fired was a union member, and most were part of the committees organizing union activities at Rockstar’s UK studios.
