Some of OpTic Gaming’s most popular members, including Scump and H3CZ, are facing backlash after starting gambling livestreams with Roobet, a crypto-based online casino. The creators have been streaming themselves playing online slot games both on Roobet and Kick.com, which has left many fans disappointed.
Just a few days ago, they revealed their new partnership with Roobet. As part of the deal, they host gambling events and streams. However, many fans are upset, saying the streams feel “fake” and that Scump, in particular, doesn’t seem genuine during the broadcasts. Viewers have also pointed out that his audience includes many younger fans, which makes the promotion of gambling more controversial.
Concerns About Influencer Responsibility
Roobet has worked with celebrities before, but this partnership has sparked extra concern because of OpTic’s strong reputation in the Call of Duty community. Critics argue that promoting gambling could send the wrong message to fans, especially since OpTic has a long history of being a respected name in esports.
Other creators have joined similar ventures. Nadeshot, the founder of 100 Thieves, also streamed gambling sessions after traveling to Mexico to avoid U.S. gambling restrictions. Fans called him out for doing so while his company was laying off employees.
Fans and other influencers have voiced their frustration online. In one viral post, Birdman pointed out the irony that Pred, a former OpTic Gaming player, was once removed from the team for having gambling issues.
A clip shared on Reddit showed Scump pretending to celebrate after hitting multipliers and bonuses on a virtual slot machine. Many viewers called the reactions over-the-top and “forced,” adding to the criticism surrounding the streams.
While gambling and betting already play a role in esports, some believe that promoting slot machines is a step too far.
