Sony has released its financial results for Q1 of the 2024 fiscal year, covering April 1 to June 30. The PS5 has now reached 61.7m units sold lifetime. During this quarter, Sony sold 2.4m PS5 consoles, marking a 27% decrease from the 3.3m sold in the same period last year.
Despite the decline in hardware sales, Sony's Games and Network Services division saw a 12% increase in sales year-on-year, resulting in a 32% boost in operating income.

The company reported that first-party game sales and PlayStation Plus subscriptions grew, with 80% of the 53.6m PS5 games sold in Q1 being digital downloads. Software sales generated $3.30 billion, representing nearly 20% growth year-over-year, although hardware revenue fell by 21% to $990m.
Sony also reported 116m registered monthly active users, up from 108m last year but down from 118m in Q4 FY23. Looking ahead, the remainder of the year appears relatively quiet for Sony’s first-party titles. The multiplayer game Concord is set to launch later this month, and an Astro Bot sequel is due on September 6. However, major franchises like Spider-Man, God of War, The Last of Us, and Horizon are not expected to release new entries until at least April 2025.
