Bill Petras, the celebrated art director behind iconic titles like World of Warcraft and Overwatch, has passed away unexpectedly, prompting tributes from across the gaming industry.
The news was shared by Harley D. Huggins II, a former cinematic projects director at Blizzard Entertainment, who commemorated his longtime friend and colleague in a heartfelt post on LinkedIn.
“Bill Petras, a game development legend, has unexpectedly passed away,” Huggins wrote. “Billy was an amazingly gifted artist who worked at Blizzard Entertainment for almost two decades. He was immensely proud of the work he did there, most notably as the Art Director for World of Warcraft and Overwatch."

“Billy and I started at Blizzard the same week and were close friends for 28 years,” he added. “I will miss our regular, long, rambling conversations about life, game dev, games, art, comic books, toys, monster movies, and Conan. He will be deeply missed by me and all who knew him.”
Petras began his game development career in the early 1990s, contributing art to PC titles such as BloodNet and Star Crusader. He joined Blizzard in 1997, where he helped shape the visual identity of StarCraft, including its acclaimed box and manual artwork.
Over the years, Petras played a key role in defining the look and feel of Blizzard’s most beloved titles. He contributed to WarCraft III before taking the reins as art director for World of Warcraft, setting the distinctive, stylized aesthetic that would come to define the massively multiplayer online game at its launch in 2004.
After leaving Blizzard in 2005, Petras co-founded Red 5 Studios, where he worked on the MMO Firefall. He returned to Blizzard in 2010, leading the art direction for Overwatch, the team-based shooter that grew out of the canceled MMO project Titan. He remained with the company until 2021.
