New Head of Xbox Game Studios Revealed

Alan Hartman, head of Xbox Game Studios, will retire at the end of November. Craig Duncan, currently the boss of Rare, will take over his role. Hartman has been with Microsoft since 2005, primarily leading Turn 10 and the Forza franchise. He assumed leadership of Xbox Game Studios last year and has contributed to notable franchises like Age of Empires and Fable.

Duncan, who has led Rare for nearly 14 years, is recognized for overseeing the studio's Kinect titles and the successful launch of Sea of Thieves, which has attracted over 40 million players since its 2018 release. Recently, he attended the 2024 GamesIndustry.biz Best Places To Work Awards, where Rare won three awards.

Before his tenure at Rare, Duncan held leadership roles at Sumo Digital, Midway, and Codemasters, and he is also the VP of the charity SpecialEffect. In his new role, he will oversee Xbox teams including Halo Studios, The Coalition, Turn 10, Playground Games, Rare, and several others, reporting to Matt Booty, president of Game Content and Studios.

Joe Neate and Jim Horth will replace Duncan at Rare. Neate has been with Rare since 2013 and has served as executive producer for Sea of Thieves. Horth, a Rare team member for over 20 years, has held various roles, most recently as studio director.
