Roblox Corporation is facing a major legal challenge after Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill filed a lawsuit accusing the online gaming platform of enabling child exploitation through lax safety protocols and misleading safety claims. Filed in Louisiana’s 21st Judicial District Court, the 42-page complaint alleges that Roblox has failed to implement adequate protections for its young users, calling the platform “the perfect place for pedophiles.” The suit claims the company knowingly or recklessly designed a system that allows adults to impersonate children and minors to bypass safeguards intended for users under 13. At the heart of the lawsuit is Roblox’s lack of a reliable age verification system, which, according to Murrill, allows users to create accounts using false birthdates. This gap, the suit argues, exposes the platform’s tens of millions of users—20% of whom are under the age of 9, per the company’s 2024–25 annual report—to potentially harmful interactions. “Roblox is overrun with harmful content and child predators because it prioritizes user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety,” Murrill said in a statement. “Every parent should be aware of the clear and present danger [posed] to their children by Roblox so they can prevent the unthinkable from ever happening in their own home.” The complaint highlights specific examples of disturbing content previously accessible on the platform, including games titled “Escape to Epstein Island,” “Diddy Party,” and “Public Bathroom Simulator Vibe.” One alarming case referenced in the suit involves a Louisiana man arrested last month for possessing child sexual abuse material. According to the filing, the man was actively using Roblox during his arrest and had allegedly used voice-modifying software to impersonate a young girl in order to lure and exploit minors. The lawsuit accuses Roblox of unfair trade practices, negligence, and unjust enrichment, and seeks a permanent injunction to stop the company from falsely advertising its safety features as sufficient. It does not outline a specific financial damages claim. While the company has not responded directly to the allegations due to the ongoing litigation, a Roblox spokesperson emphasized the platform’s commitment to user safety. “We dedicate substantial resources to help detect and prevent inappropriate content and behavior, including attempts to direct users off platform, where safety standards and moderation may be less stringent than ours,” the company said in a statement. “While no system is perfect, Roblox has implemented rigorous technology and enforcement safeguards, including restrictions on sharing personal information, links, and user-to-user image sharing. The safety of our community is a top priority.” In recent months, Roblox has rolled out new measures to bolster child safety. In November 2024, it introduced restrictions preventing users under 13 from sending direct messages and launched updated content rating categories aimed at clarifying age-appropriate experiences. These steps came shortly after a damning report from Hindenburg Research labeled the platform an “X-rated pedophile hellscape,” accusing Roblox of exposing minors to grooming, explicit content, and abusive language.
